The old Limbang’s STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) airfield was built in 1963 by The British Army in needs of operation during the confrontation. Situated aside of Bukit Mas, about 3 miles from the Limbang town. This old airfield was not met the safety requirement of ICAO. Furthermore, the airfield surrounded by mountain and the Approach Path was covered by high tree with high ground. Make difficulty for the aircraft operation.

In 1978 a Consultant Firm was appointed to select the new site for the new airport and proceed on the Master Plan Study on the layout of the new airport. The development plan of the new airport is to accommodate the Fokker 27 aircraft operation in the beginning and thereafter Boeing 737 aircraft operation.

The new Limbang Airport project started in 2000 and was finished in 2004. With new Runway of 1500 meter long to accommodate Fokker 50 Aircraft. The new airport located about 6 km North-West of Limbang Town.

This Limbang New Airport was officially opened on April 7 2004 and full operational opened was on April 15 2004.
