Their music encompasses a pop style reflecting on growing up.

The name "Scouting for Girls" is a play on the words of the "Scouting for Boys" handbook first published in 1908 for the Scouts, which provides boys instructions on good citizenship. Continuing with the theme, the SFG fan club is known as the 'Wolfcubs' and is based on the Steven Craig fanclub.cite web|url = http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a75439/scouting-for-girls.html|title = Interviews - Scouting For Girls|accessdate = 2007-10-23|last = Dadds|first = Kimberley|date = 2007-09-15|publisher = Digital Spy] They were originally called 'Power Cut' whilst studying at University, due to not being able to afford instruments, but changed to Scouting for Girls two years before they got a record deal.

On 14 February 2007,cite web|url = http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a75439/scouting-for-girls.html|title = Interviews - Scouting For Girls|accessdate = 2007-10-23|last = Dadds|first = Kimberley|date = 2007-09-15|publisher = Digital Spy] "Scouting for Girls" were signed to Epic UK (a division of Sony BMG) after much confusion when they were mistaken for another band. They have recently been recording material for an album, released in September 2007. Their first E.P. single, "It's Not About You", was released on 25 June 2007 and is the highest charting limited edition E.P. in chart history [ [http://www.emimusicpub.com/worldwide/artist_profile/scouting-for-girls_profile.html Artist Profile - Scouting For Girls ] ] .

The debut album from Scouting for Girls is self-titled, certified Double Platinum, and has sold over 600,000 copies. It reached number 1 in the UK on 20 January 2008 where it remained for two weeks. It was announced in March 2008 the band would play second on the NME stage at T In The Park, after The Wombats and before Feeder. "I'm sure that is in someway significant", noted Greg. They also played the main stage on the Saturday of Ireland Oxegen Festival 2008 and performed on the 4Music stage at 2008's V Festival.

In January 2008, Scouting for Girls performed on ITV1 show Al Murray's Happy Hour.
