Rørvik

"This is not the ferry harbor in Trondheimsfjord or the beach in Lofoten with the same name." coast.Rørvik has 2,609 inhabitants as of January 2006, and as of January 2007 there are 4,019 inhabitants in the municipality.

Geography

The town is located in the nortwestern part of Nord-Trøndelag county in central Norway, approximately 200 Kilometers north of the city of Trondheim (320 km by road). Rørvik lies at the eastern part of the Vikna archipelago, on the "Innervikna" island at the western shore of "Nærøysundet" strait, facing the mainland on the eastern shore of the strait. The climate is maritime (1), and many private gardens have plum and apple trees even here at 65°N.

The municipality consists of approximately 6,000 islands, big and small, and its top elevation is Vattafjellet, 173 metres (≈568 ft) above sea level (there are higher hills on the mainland nearby in neighbouring municipalities).

Economy

There are several museums in Rørvik and a hotel. Telenor Mobil is an important employer, as is public service, fishing and commercial salmon fish farming. There is also a high school in Rørvik, Ytre Namdal Videregående Skole (YNVS).

History

This area was early settled, and there are several prehistoric burial mounds. Among the rocky slopes and cliffs on the islands are many surprisingly lush lowland fields, and farming and fishing were the traditional ways of life, as they partly still are. The last decades have seen many people moving to Rørvik from other parts of the archipelago. On October 21 1962 the coastal steamer (Hurtigruten) "Sanct Svithun" run aground on "Nordøyan" as a result of navigational error. The ship sunk, and there was a tragic loss of 41 lives. A memorial bauta was raised on Nordøyan in 2002.

Sør-Gjæslingan, comprising about 80 islands and islets in the southern part of the archipelago, was one of the largest fishing communities south of Lofoten, and is still well preserved; a boat route from Rørvik three times a week allows locals and tourists to visit the islands in summer ( [http://www.sor-gjaeslingan.no/ ] ).

Communications

Rørvik is a port of call of Hurtigruten, and the northbound and southbound ships meet in Rørvik in the evening. The speedboat Namdalingen is taking people to the closest city, Namsos, three times a day. The town is served by Rørvik Airport, Ryum. There is road connection east to E6 with no ferry crossings.
