Swim Deeper

Swim Deeper is a progressive jazz/pop band from America. They formed in Essex, Connecticut in the spring of 1998. A blending of Steely Dan and The Alan Parsons Project, they combine elements from many of their musical heroes. Current band members include: Geoff Cox (sax), Jim Jaillet (bass), Ed Kumpitsch (drums), John Ossa (lead guitar), and Mike Rydene (keys).

History

(1998–2000) And then there were three

The original band members consisted of a three man line-up. Ed Kumpitsch on percussion and drums, Jim Jaillet on bass guitar and lead vocals, and Mike Rydene playing keys, acoustic guitar and on vocal duties. The first few years the band played cover songs from artists like Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, Santana, and Counting Crows to name a few. They played bar and restaurant gigs as well as fairs and private parties. The band had the reputation as being totally crowd oriented, often inviting individuals up on stage to sing or play along with them.

(2001) The big man arrives

During the 2000 tour while playing a show in Connecticut, a man gave a security guard a piece of paper and asked if he would deliver it to band member Jim Jaillet. The paper had a name and number on it and said that the band needed a lead guitarist. Jim kept the paper but did nothing about it for a year. Then in 2001, the band was discussing bringing in another guitarist to do leads and backup vocals. The rest is history; John Ossa joined the band later that year and was a great fit to the puzzle.

(2003) The "G" man shakes things up

In 2003 the band realized they were missing a critical part, namely a sax player. Most of the cover songs they played had horn parts that the band either took out or modified to fit the needs of the quartet. Geoff Cox joined the line-up shortly after, and brought a new energy to the group. Mike Rydene met Geoff in the winter of 2002 through a chance encounter in Mystic where they struck-up a conversation about recording and music. Geoff at the time was living in East Haddam while working in Hartford, but welcomed the commute to Studio 17 to rehearse and record with the boys.

(2005) Siamese cats give birth to “triangles”

The band's first release of original music came in 2005. The CD "Triangles" which was produced by Siamese Cat Music, featured popular tracks such as "Triangles", "Dreams", "Fish Talk", and "3 Legged Dog". Although the band never formally toured to promote this album, it fared well, although it did better in Europe than in the States. After a short hiatus the band regrouped to begin writing and recording their next release "After Dark".

Present

Swim Deeper continues to record new material in Studio 17 and sell CDs around the globe.
