Green Mountain High School is a high school in the western part of the city of Lakewood in Jefferson County, Colorado. It is administered by Jefferson County Public Schools. The student body numbers approximately 1600. Over 80% of Green Mountain students, according to survey, intend to attend college. The school has been more known for its recent rash of inappropriate teacher-student relationships, and as such has gone through several staff and administration changes since 2004.

Academics

Green Mountain High School offers all core curriculum mandated by district policy and state law, as well as offering four-level courses in Spanish, French, and German, with Advanced Placement courses offered in Spanish and French, which equate to college credit pending the results of a College Board examination upon completion. Advanced Placement courses are also offered in English, American History, European History, World History, Chemistry, and Calculus, as well as various accelerated and Honors courses.

Visual and Performing Arts

Green Mountain High School offers both visual arts, with courses in Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Photograhy and Graphic Arts, and performing arts. Green Mountain instructor Barbara Amberg, recipient of multiple high school theater educator awards, offers courses in acting as well as both musical and non-musical stage productions. Five student choral ensembles perform regularly for class credit, including a large concert choir and two chamber ensembles: SATB "Shadows of the Mountain", and SSAA "Images". Both chamber choirs represnt the school regularly at music competitions for both classical style, such as the dn|University of Colorado Madrigal Festival, as well as jazz, such as the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival.Instrumental music is offered at Green Mountain through eight ensembles, including two concert bands, two string orchestras a percussion ensemble, two jazz bands ("Spectrum I" and "II"), and the Green Mountain High School "Marching Rams" competetive marching band, which regularly represents the school at the Colorado Bandmasters Association state championships as finalists for more than twenty consecutive years. Both concert bands often attend contests such as the Columbine High School Band Festival. "Spectrum I" was invited in 2006 to attend and perform at the meeting of the Colorado Music Educators Association. The string orchestras are directed by instructor Carla Hawley, and perform at concerts together, as well as in conjunction with the concert bands.

History

Green Mountain High School graduated its first class of students in 1975. There's more.

2001-02 Suicides

In the 2001-02 school year four students committed suicide. It was a blow to both the school's sports teams as well as the surrounding community. In an effort to decrease the risk of more possible suicides, a fund raiser called the "Second Wind Fund" was created. There is a walk/run/crawl fund raiser held annually to help earn money for students under 19 that are uninsured or under insured and have a risk of suicide.

2003 Senior Pranks

In 2003, a major prank was pulled off in Green Mountain History. Three seniors hijacked the school's intercom system during 2nd period and played a profanity-laced song for approximately five minutes. During this time, school administration officials were sent into a panic, trying desperately to locate the room which contained the compromised phone. As the message played, most students understood it to be a prank, however it is said some teachers believed it to be a terrorist attack and even evacuated their classes outside until they were assured no one was in danger.

The three seniors were later caught, apparently, because one of the three confessed, despite the fact that there was no evidence left behind and none were spotted near the room in which the phone was found. Two were handed suspensions of five days and ten days, respectively, while the third, the confessor, was expelled.
