Derana is a Sri Lankan Free-to-air Television channel which was launched on 11 October 2005. Derana broadcasts contemporary content that upholds Sri Lankan values on its “Ape De Rakagena, Aluth De Aragena” platform.

Derana broadcasts 16 hours a day from 6 am with back to back entertainment and news content. The channel has expanded its reach to cover over 90% of its target groups via five sub-stations in Nuwara Eliya, Deniyaya, Gammaduwa, Kandy and Kaluthara with the main transmission tower located at Darley Road, Colombo.

The channel focuses heavily on high-end programming that meets the stringent expectations of viewers in the two premium socio-economic categorisations SEC A and SEC B. Since its launch in 2005, Derana has stayed within the top half of local television channels and independent research shows that Derana is the most popular free-to-air network among families with the highest purchasing power in Sri Lanka.

Derana delivers vernacular (Sinhala) content, a strategic choice borne out of an understanding that Sri Lankans are essentially vernacular. By delivering locally developed content that is contemporary, thought provoking, well produced, and relevant, Derana attempts to meet the needs of the modern, youthful and patriotic viewer.

Ada Derana

In the highly competitive news broadcasting space, Derana has built probably the best news property on offer “Ada Derana” – with a news team of 75 people geared to deliver the most accurate and timely information.

In late 2007, Ada Derana entered into a partnership with Dialog Telekom, the largest mobile phone operator in Sri Lanka to send breaking news alerts to all the subscribers of Dialog mobile users as Short Text Messages (SMS).

Reality Television

Derana airs a number of popular Reality TV programmes, such as Derana Dream Star, Derana Little Star and Derana Real Leader.
