Samuel Richardson (cricketer)

Samuel Richardson (cricketer)

Samuel Richardson (May 24, 1844 — January 18, 1938) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and an occasional wicket-keeper, who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1878. He was born in Derby.

Richardson was wicket-keeper and captain of Derbyshire's first ever match as a first-class side, in 1871. This match, which the team won by an innings margin, held for 87 years the record for the lowest total ever scored against a Derbyshire county team.

Richardson remained club captain until the 1875 season, though he played during 1876. Absent throughout 1877, he made his final appearance for the team in 1878, though he quit the game soon after.

Richardson emigrated to Spain late in his life and died at the age of 93 in Madrid. He was the longest-living member of the first representative Derbyshire cricket team.
