The American International School / Dhaka (AIS/D) is an independent co-educational day school located in Baridhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and serving students of all nationalities in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12.

History

The precursor to AIS/D was the Dacca American Society School (DASS), founded in 1953, while Bangladesh was still East Pakistan. DASS closed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, and AIS/D was founded in 1972.

At its founding in 1972, AIS/D was housed in a single building which was located in Gulshan, serving a small population of international students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.

The current school is located on a convert|4|acre|m2|sing=on site in Baridhara, a residential area of Dhaka, serving pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Enrollment

At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, enrollment was 650. Of the total, 149 were U.S. citizens, 70 host-country nationals, and 431 third-country nationals. [http://www.ais-dhaka.net/]

Curriculum

Instruction is in English, and the curriculum is reflective of a college-preparatory U.S. school. The national and cultural diversity of the student body and faculty, in combination with its location in Bangladesh, interact to add extra dimension to the curriculum.

IB Program

AIS/D introduced the International Baccalaureate program for the first time during the 2006-2007 school year. The graduating class of 2008 is the first AIS/D class to ever have the chance to receive the IB diploma.

Accreditation

AIS/D is recognized and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and by the Council of International Schools. [http://www.ais-dhaka.net/]

Alumni

The vast majority of AIS/D alumni go on to universities in the English-speaking world, primarily in the USA and Canada, and the school has successfully prepared students for Ivy League universities in the USA as well as Oxbridge in the UK. However, AIS/D has no formal alumni association.
