Schutz American School, Alexandria

The Schutz American School is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten (Early Childhood Program) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1924. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from late August through mid-June.

Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member self-perpetuating School Board, serving renewable 3-year terms.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic and college-preparatory public schools. The School's testing program includes PSAT, SAT, Advanced Placement and other College Board test and Iowa tests. Instruction is in English. French and Arabic are taught as foreign languages beginning grade 5. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the European Council of International Schools.

Faculty: There are 33 full-time and 3 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 11 U.S. citizens, 14 host-country nationals, and 11 were third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 228 (ECP-grade 4: 84; grades 5-8: 67; and grades 9-12: 77). Of the total enrollment, 59 were U.S. citizens, 83 were host-country nationals, and 86 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The School operates on 2 campuses - one for the elementary school (ECP-grade 4) and one for the middle and high schools (grades 5-12). Lighted sporting facilities include tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, and a weight room.
