Romo Lampkin is a character in the television remake of "Battlestar Galactica". He is portrayed by Mark Sheppard. He first appeared in the third season episode, "The Son Also Rises."

Lampkin was appointed by Laura Roslin and Admiral Adama as Gaius Baltar's Public Defender after Baltar's previous attorney was assassinated in a bombing. Lampkin used deceit to manipulate others into revealing information. He also kept using his cane as a means of getting unconscious sympathy from others. Following the trial, he is discussing the law with Lee Adama and sets the cane aside to use both hands to make a point. As he leaves, Lee sees the cane still where Lampkin put it down and realizes he was duped as well.

He is a kleptomaniac, and during the period of Baltar's trial he stole items that suited him, whether they revealed characters' feelings, such as Adama's uniform button, or they were items people required, such as Roslin's eyeglasses, Baltar's pen, or a bomb part from Aaron Kelly. He often used his cane as a distraction for his pickpocketing efforts. He typically wears dark sunglasses.

Lampkin narrowly escaped death after one of Kelly's terrorist attacks. The part he stole from Kelly led to Kelly's arrest.

After the baseship with Laura Roslin jumps away, Lampkin assists Lee Adama in finding a suitable replacement for acting president. After rejecting all other candidates, Lampkin informs Adama that he is the best qualified for the job and, overwhelmed with grief and disgust with the human race as a whole (due to the killing of his loathed pet cat), points a gun at Adama's head. Adama talks Lampkin out of killing him, and is later sworn in as acting president.

History

At the age of 9, Lampkin's parents were kidnapped and murdered. He lived with his uncle until he could steal enough money to run away. Later, Lampkin became a student of Joseph Adama on Caprica. He said he hated Joseph Adama, but emulated Adama's desire to learn about the human condition. Lampkin said he had a 10-year relationship with a woman he deeply loved, however, the relationship ended.
