Michael Baden-Powell

Michael Baden-Powell

David Michael Baden-Powell (born 11 December 1940) is the heir presumptive to the Barony of Baden-Powell. He is the great-grandson of Baden Powell, the grandson of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-Powell, the great-nephew of Agnes Baden-Powell, Baden Baden-Powell, and Warington Baden-Powell, the nephew of Betty Clay, the son of Peter Baden-Powell, 2nd Baron Baden-Powell, and the brother of Robert Crause Baden-Powell, 3rd Baron Baden-Powell.

Educated at Pierrepont School, Frensham, England[1] he married Joan Phillips Berryman in 1966. The couple has three sons, and lives in Australia. [1]

Scouting

Baden-Powell is active in the Victorian Branch of the Scouts Australia.[2] [3][4]

In late July and early August 2007, Baden-Powell oversaw the 100th anniversary of the start of the world Scouting movement at Brownsea Island and stated that the movement was still going on strong. [5] During 2007 he was also instrumental in preserving the caravan trailer, presented to his grandfather along with a new Rolls-Royce car, during the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in 1929. The caravan was nicknamed Eccles. The car, nicknamed Jam Roll, was sold after Robert Baden-Powell's death. Jam Roll and Eccles were reunited at Gilwell Park for the 21st World Scout Jamboree in 2007. Michael Baden-Powell and three other Scouters formed the charitable company "B-P Jam Roll Ltd." with the aim of purchasing and conserving Jam Roll on behalf of Scouting. Funds are being raised to repay the loan that was used to purchase the car.[6][7]

In August 2008 Michael Baden-Powell took part in the 25th World Conference of the International Scout and Guide Fellowship in Vienna.[8][9]

As of 2009, Micheal Baden-Powell is Branch Commissioner for Special Duties.

Freemasonry

Baden-Powell was Master of the Baden-Powell Freemason lodge (no 488, Victoria), the first to be named after his grandfather, in 1930, who donated the Volume of Sacred Law in 1931. The lodge was founded by Scouters and has close links to Scouting. He remains an active member.[2][10][11]

In June 2007, within the Centenary year of Scouting, Baden-Powell addressed Freemasons and Scouts, and non-Masonic Scouters, at meetings of Pioneer Lodge in the County of Derbyshire and Walesby Forest Lodge in the County of Nottinghamshire (both in United Grand Lodge of England, and also both lodge members of the Kindred Lodges Association).[12]
