Rory McCarthy (born 4 September, 1975) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club St. Martin's and with the Wexford senior inter-county team. He plays in the half-back line.

Early life

Rory McCarthy was born near Piercestown, County Wexford in 1975. He was educated locally and from an early age he showed great skill at Gaelic games. McCarthy later attended St. Peter’s College, a virtual academy for young hurling and football talent. Here he won a Leinster Colleges’ medal in football at both senior and junior levels, an All-Ireland Colleges medal in football in 1993. While his early successes were in the game of football it would be as a hurler that he would have much more success.

Playing career

Club

McCarthy plays his club hurling and football with his local St. Martin's club. He has enjoyed some success at underage levels and in 1999 he won his first, and to date his only, county championship medal.

Inter-county

McCarthy first came to prominence in the early 1990s when he joined the Wexford minor hurling team. He had little success in this grade and subsequently graduated onto the under-21 panel where he won a Leinster title in 1996.

By this stage McCarthy was already playing on the senior team as he made his debut in the 1994 Leinster final against Offaly. Two years later in 1996 he won his first senior Leinster medal. This was later converted into his first All-Ireland medal following a win in the final over Limerick. McCarthy finished off the year by winning his first All-Star award. In 1997 he won his second Leinster title, however, Wexford were degeated by Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following years proved frustrating for Wexford as the sude faced a resurgent Kilkenny. It took until 2004 for McCarthy to claim his third Leinster title, however, his side were later defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final.
