Biography

Dempsey's first role was at the age of 14, when he was cast as "Peter Pevensie", the lead role in the BBC's adaptation of "" in 1988. The following year, he appeared in the adaptation of Prince Caspian.

At the age of 17, he made his professional stage debut in the role of "Jack" in the London production of the award-winning musical "Into the woods" with music and lyrics by "Stephen Sondheim". He also starred as "Nick Piazza" in the West End hit musical "Fame" in 1995/96 and as "Ugly" in the musical "Honk!". He has since performed in a large variety of roles in television, film and on stage (e.g. with the Royal Shakespeare Company).

In 2007 Richard Dempsey completed a year in the stage adaptation of "Eleanor Bergstein's"' "Dirty Dancing" at the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End playing "Neil Kellerman".

In late 2007 and early 2008, Dempsey starred in "Chatroom/Citizenship" at The National Theatre, and also toured with the production in Hong Kong. In the summer of 2008 he is touring "The One Hour Dream", directed by "Edward Hall" and has completed a workshop of a new musical based on the songs of "Squeeze", called "Up The Junction", developed by the Really Useful Group.

Also, in October 2008, Richard was spotted in a children's adaptation of 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' which was performed at the Viaduct Theatre in Halifax, West Yorkshire. He stated in a question and answer session after the performance that "the play is touring the country". Though he did not say where it can be seen next.

Richard Dempsey's voice can be heard on the Original Cast Recordings of "Into the woods", "Fame", "Honk!", "Just so" and "Dirty Dancing" and on the CD "Weird and Wonderful" with wonderfully ironic songs by "Alexander S. Bermange".
