History

It occupies a 23 acre site in the North East of England. The plant was constructed in just 29 months by a workforce of 3000, largely drawn from the local area. The plant began operations in April 1993 and employs 200 people.

Teesside Power Station used to be owned by US energy company Enron.Cite news

] After Enron's bankruptcy in 2002, the power station was sold to a management buyout. It was owned by Teesside Power Limited and operated on behalf of its owners by PX Limited. TPL had been carrying out a programme of upgrades and considered further major investments to extend the life of the plant and improve its efficiency, taking advantage of major advances in gas-fired power generation technology.

On 25 February 2008 Teesside Power Station was acquired jointly by Gaz de France and Suez.

Operations

The station is capable of being fired with Natural Gas, Propane and Naphtha Fuel.

The station's 1875 MW of power are provided by a number of generators:
* Eight 152 MW Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Westinghouse 701DA Gas Turbines, each fitted with a Heat Recovery Steam Generator Nooter Eriksen, with supplementary firing.
* Two 305 MW Mitsubishi Westinghouse Steam Turbines.
* One 43 MW LM6000 General Electric Black Start Gas Turbine.

The power station produces enough electricity to provide about 3% of the UK's electricity needs.

As well as electricity, the plant can produce up to 800 tonnes of process steam per hour for the adjacent Wilton International chemical complex.

Electricity from the station is sent to two 275 kilovolt (kV)) ABB gas insulated substations.

The station's cooling system consists of one hyperbolic forced draught cooling tower and two forced draught hybrid supplementary cooling towers.

Visitor Centre

The power station's site also includes a visitor centre, which was opened by MP Mo Mowlam on 6 November 1998. [cite web
