It was built between 1807 and 1815 [http://edinburghlectures.org/internet/Leisure/Local_history_and_heritage/Monuments/Other_monuments/CEC_nelson_monument City of Edinburgh Counci [ - Nelson Monument] ] to commemorate Nelson's victory over the French and Spanish fleets at theBattle of Trafalgar in 1805.The
monument was designed byRobert Burn to look like an upturnedtelescope . A castellated building designed byThomas Bonnar which forms a base to the tower was added between 1814 and 1816. This replaced an existing mast on the site, and from 1853 acted as a time-keeper to the ships in Edinburgh's port of
Leith , and to ships at the anchorage in theFirth of Forth known as "Leith Roads", allowing the ships to set their chronometers. It was important for mariners to know the exact time so that they could navigate the seas therefore at precisly 1pm every afternoon a gun is fired fromEdinburgh Castle as a time signal. However, as it takes over 10 seconds for the sound to travel the 2 miles toLeith Harbour atime ball is dropped from atop the mast on Nelson's monument on weekdays at exactly 1pm as the gun sounds to act as a more accurate visual aid to mariners. Edinburgh has long been a place where if a gun goes off, people look at their watches.
Inscription
Found upon a plaque on the monument is the following dedication:
"To the memory of Vice-Admiral Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson, and of the great victory of Trafalgar, too dearly purchased with his blood, the grateful citizens of Edinburgh have erected this monument: not to express their unavailing sorrow for his death; nor yet to celebrate this matchless glories of his life; but, by his noble example, to teach their sons to emulate what they admire, and, like him, when duty requires it, to die for their country.
