Tommy Quaid was born in
Feohanagh ,Mahoonagh parish , nearNewcastle West ,County Limerick in 1957. He was born into a family that had a strong association withhurling . His father,Jack Quaid , was one of the key players on the Limerick team which beat London in the 1954 junior All-Ireland final. He won a senior Munster title the following year.Tommy Quaid was educated locally at Feohanagh National School before later attending
Newcastle West Secondary School. He trained as a fitter with the local Golden Vale company and later set up his own engineering business.Tommy Quaid's sons Tomás and Nicky have represented Limerick at underage hurling and were members of the Effin team that lost the 2007 Limerick junior A hurling final to Caherline and Nicky now plays in goals for the U21 limerick team.
Playing career
Club
Quaid, along with his three brothers and 1 sister, played club hurling with the local Feohanagh-Castlemahon club. Tommy Quaid along with his brothers, Uncles and Father, who all played club or inter-county hurling at some stage of their careers.He won many awards with the club and in 1990 he captained
Feohanagh-Castlemahon GAA to a West Limerick SHC title. Unfortunately Quaid never won a county senior title. In later years he played his club hurling with Effin, where he moved to after his marriage to Bridea and where he won three South Limerick JHC titles.He played in the forwards during most of his club career and, more often than not, was also the team's free-taker.

Inter-county
Quaid was passed over for inter-county duty on the Limerick minor team in 1973, however, he joined the side the following year as goalkeeper. Unfortunately he ended up on the losing side in back-to-back Munster finals in 1974 and 1975. By this stage Quaid was also a member of Limerick’s under-21 team but had little success at this level either. He made his senior inter-county debut in the
National Hurling League in early 1976, however, he had a disastrous game against Kilkenny. In spite of this he was till picked as Limerick’s first-choice goalkeeper for the championship.Senior Hurling Championship
In 1980 Quaid tasted his first senior success when he won his first Munster title. In the subsequent All-Ireland final Limerick were beaten by Galway. In 1981 Quaid captured a second Munster medal, however, this time Limerick were once again beaten by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. In spite of National League victories, Quaid had little success in the Munster championship with Limerick.

In 1984 he won his first National League medal with the Limerick Hurlers. The win was all the more special as it was the centenary year of the
Gaelic Athletic Association . A second National League title was collected by Quaid in 1985.In 1992 Quaid won a third National League medal.All Ireland All Star Hurling Award
In spite of Limerick losing the 1992 Munster final to Cork. Quaid’s championship performance earned him his first, and only, All-Star award.

End of Limerick Senior Career
Following the completion of the 1993 Munster championship Quaid decided to retire after 18 consecutive championship seasons as goalkeeper. He was replaced on the Limerick team by his Cousin,

Death
In retirement from playing at inter-county level, Quaid became involved in the management side of hurling. He coached the Limerick intermediate team in the 1998, however, on the week before his team were to play Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final tragedy struck. While working on the
Credit Union building inCharleville ,County Cork , Quaid fell 20 feet from some scaffolding and landed on his back, hitting his head in the process. He was immediately rushed to hospital, however, he died from his injuries several days later on10 October ,1998 .Tommy Quaid Perpetual Cup
May 1st 2008, the Iverahain Golf Society launched the inaugural Tommy Quaid Perpetual Cup in The Hurlers,
Castletroy ,County Limerick .The Iverahain Golf Society will held its first annual outing at Limerick County Golf and Country Club on Saturday May 10th 2008. Membership of the society is confined to men who have worn the Hurling Number 1 jersey at senior inter-county level for one of the six Munster counties.The Tommy Quaid Perpetual Cup will be awarded to the winner of this annual competition and the outing will alternate between the six Munster counties over the coming years. Present and former Hurling goalkeepers from the entire province have jumped at the opportunity of participating in this novel outing.

The apples in the orchard,
are ripe for picking now
Brown gold and red, the leaves are shed
from bare and drooping brough,
The Chestnuts too are falling,
laying scattered through the glade
But a hurler’s eye won’t see them-
Feohanagh`s Tommy Quaid.
He`d catch a swooping swallow
going through a barn door
Our goalman with the eagle eye
whose face we`ll see no more
He ruled the square with skill and flair
undaunted, unafraid
But his race is done, our darling son

From seventy six to ninety three
his was a staring role
Leading by example
as he guarded Limerick’s goal,
