Lower Dauphin High School is a public high school located in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Lower Dauphin High School was built in 1960 and was completely renovated in 1995. Construction work was completed in 2003 which added a two-story classroom wing and expanded the cafeteria and band room. Enrollment at the high school was 1,275 in the 2006-07 school year. However, the district administration and school board have worked together with the faculty to keep class sizes at a level which ensures individual attention for all students.

Foundations of the High School Program

Students take classes for eleven periods every day in a six-day cycle. Periods 5-9 are split into 3 periods depending on what lunch students have. Within the six-day cycle, students take physical education three times a cycle all four years of high school. Alternating with physical education, ninth-grade students take environmental science and tenth-grade students take both Career Explorations and Highway Safety, each for half the year. Eleventh-grade students must take health class, alternating with physical education. The academic day begins at 7:34 am and runs until 2:30 pm. Office hours are from 7:00am to 3:45pm.

The students for Lower Dauphin High School are pulled from the five municipalities of Lower Dauphin: Hummelstown, East Hanover, South Hanover, Londonderry Township, and Conewago Township.

The students are taken from the Elementary schools of: Nye Elementary School (Hummelstown), East Hanover Elementary School, South Hanover Elementary School, Londonderry Elementary School, and Conewago Elementary School.

Grading Scales and Course Levels

The High School curriculum is offered at 'levels' to suit the abilities and academic needs of all students. English courses are offered at general, career, college preparatory and honors levels. Math, science and social studies courses are offered at general, college preparatory, and honors levels. A gifted curriculum that has special criteria for participation is also offered and there is an extensive Advanced Placement program available in all academic departments, as well as, the art department.

Students earn a numerical value for grades:
A=90-100%
B=80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=0-59%
Report card grades reflect the actual numerical value earned.

College Statistics

Approximately 80 percent of Lower Dauphin High School graduates continue their education beyond High School, either in four-year institutions, two-year colleges, or technical institutions. Students have been accepted into fine institutions such as Bucknell University, Cornell University, Brown University, Harvard University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the U.S. Army, Air Force, the U.S. Naval Academy, Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University among many others.

The local community college - HACC (Harrisburg Area Community College) gets 20 to 25 percent of the Lower Dauphin graduating class. This is seemingly on-par with the majority of the local schools.

Lower Dauphin High School is accredited by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of is a member of the College Board Association of high schools.
