Kimble County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 4,468. Its county seat is JunctionGR|6. Kimble is named for George C. Kimbell, who died at the Battle of the Alamo.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,251 square miles (3,240 km²), of which, 1,250 square miles (3,239 km²) of it is land and 1 square miles (1 km²) of it (0.02%) is water.

Demographics

As of censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,000 people, 1,866 households, and 1,285 families residing in the county. The population density was 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 2,996 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.29% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 7.48% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 20.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,866 households out of which 28.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% were married couples living together, 8.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% were non-families. 28.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the county, the population was spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 22.60% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 20.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,396, and the median income for a family was $34,966. Males had a median income of $24,844 versus $20,431 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,127. About 13.40% of families and 18.80% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.80% of those under age 18 and 14.20% of those age 65 or over.
