Delta County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 5,327. It is named for its triangular shape, much like the Greek letter Delta. Two forks of the Sulphur River form its northern and southern boundaries, and meet at its easternmost point. Delta County is one of 30[1] prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas. Its seat and largest city is Cooper[2]. It was founded in 1870.

Delta County is officially part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It is represented in the Texas House of Representatives by the Republican Erwin Cain of Sulphur Springs, Texas.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 278 square miles (720.0 km2), of which 277 square miles (717.4 km2) is land and 1 square mile (2.6 km2) (0.30%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 5,506 people, 2,094 households, and 1,461 families residing in the county. The population density was 19 people per square mile (7/km²). There were 2,410 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 87.93% White, 8.28% Black or African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.18% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 3.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,094 households out of which 30.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% were married couples living together, 10.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% were non-families. 27.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the county, the population was spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,094, and the median income for a family was $37,925. Males had a median income of $31,597 versus $20,296 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,080. About 14.60% of families and 17.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.50% of those under age 18 and 20.60% of those age 65 or over.
