United Nations Security Council Resolution 1696

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1696

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1696 was adopted by the United Nations Security Council on 31 July 2006. The resolution, proposed by China, France, Germany, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States, demanded Iran halt its uranium enrichment programme. The resolution was passed by fourteen votes in favour to one (Qatar) against.

Iran's failure to respond satisfactorily led to UNSC Resolution 1737 of 23 December 2006, in which sanctions were applied. Those sanctions were subsequently stepped up by Resolution 1747 of 24 March 2007.

To the extent that these resolutions impinge upon Iran's sovereign rights, they may be ultra vires and non-binding. [ [http://www.iranaffairs.com/iran_affairs/2007/08/i-have-received.html The Legality of UNSC Resolutions on Iran] ]
