Growth differentiation factor 7 (GDF7) is a protein belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily that is specifically found in a signaling center known as the roof plate that is located in the developing nervous system of embryos. The roof plate is required for the generation of several classes of spinal cord dorsal interneurons; GDF7 specifically induces the formation of sensory neurons in the dorsal spinal cord from neural crest cells by generating signals within the roof plate. [cite journal |author=Lo L, Dormand E, Anderson D |title=Late-emigrating neural crest cells in the roof plate are restricted to a sensory fate by GDF7 |journal=Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A |volume=102 |issue=20 |pages=7192–7 |year=2005 |pmid=15883363 |doi=10.1073/pnas.0502581102] [cite journal |author=Lee K, Mendelsohn M, Jessell T |title=Neuronal patterning by BMPs: a requirement for GDF7 in the generation of a discrete class of commissural interneurons in the mouse spinal cord |journal=Genes Dev |volume=12 |issue=21 |pages=3394–407 |year=1998 |pmid=9808626 |doi=10.1101/gad.12.21.3394]
