St. Remy de Provence is a quintessentially lovely Provencal town. While there are numerous places to stay, the Chateau des Alpilles on the outskirts of town is particularly appealing. It is an 1802 chateau with an allee of plane trees leading to it. There aren't many rooms, so make reservations. The rooms have high ceilings, almost 16 feet and have been redone in French antiques and Pierre Deux fabrics. The baths are very modern. You may dine at the hotel only if you are a guest, and being a guest is well worth the splurge.

Van Gogh spent his next to last year in the asylum at St. Remy and outside the walls, there are plaques that mark the exact spot where he painted some of his paintings. You can see the landscape he saw, the gnarled olive trees he painted. It is a most memorable sight.
