James Cullen (PTAA)

Father James Cullen, SJ, (1841 - 1921), was founder of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (PTAA). He was born in New Ross and was ordained in Carlow in 1864. He founded the PTAA in 1864. An extremely devout, if rather gloomy man, he was a born organiser, who worked with great energy over many years to perfect the institution he had created.
