Adel Abdel Bary

The Egyptians Adel Mohammed Abdul Almagid Abdel Bary and Ibrahim Hussein Abdel Hadi Eidarous have been in the custody of the United Kingdom since 1999 [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/eafricabombing/eafricabombing.htm Two Arrested in U.S. Embassy Bombings] , "Washington Post", 12 July 1999] , fighting extradition to the United States, where they are wanted [http://cns.miis.edu/pubs/reports/pdfs/binladen/indict.pdf Copy of indictment] USA v. Usama bin Laden et al., Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Monterey Institute of International Studies] in connection with the 1998 United States embassy bombings. The Saudi Khalid al-Fawwaz was arrested earlier and is in a similar situation.

On a return trip from the United States to Egypt via the UK in 1991, Abdel Bary applied for political asylum. It was granted in 1993. [http://www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/rsd/rsddocview.htm?tbl=RSDCOI&id=3f7d4d90e UNHCR information on Abdel Bary and other Egyptians] , originally from the Government of Canada] While at large in London he worked for al-Qaeda's Advice and Reform Committee ("q.v.") under al-Fawwaz and alongside Eidarous.

According to the American indictment, Abdel Bary communicated by satellite phone with Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Zawahiri invited Abdel Bary into the British component of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and Abdel Bary accepted, promising to obey the EIJ leadership. Abdel Bary and Eidarous are also accused of issuing statements to several press organs shortly after the embassy bombings, in which they claim to represent the perpetrators.

Abdel Bary has been under a death sentence in his native Egypt since 1995 for his part in an EIJ plot to kill American and Israeli tourists in Cairo.c] [http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2001/556/11war3.htm Egypt's most wanted] , "al-Ahram Weekly", 18 October 2001] He received an additional life sentence "in absentia" in the 1999 case of the Returnees from Albania, "q.v.", in which he was convicted of being a media agent of EIJ and the head of EIJ's London component.
