Lower Crumpsall

Lower Crumpsall

Lower Crumpsall is a part of Crumpsall, a suburb three miles to the north of Manchester, England.

It is situated in the valley of the River Irk, which forms its northern boundary with the neighbouring suburb of Blackley at Tetlow Bridge [http://www.tetlow.co.uk/tetlow_bridge.htm] . It consisted largely of several streets of terraced houses from the mid 19th century until they were demolished by Manchester City Council in the house clearances in the 1970s.

ICI was a major employer in the area with a sizeable dyestuffs factory which often made the River Irk run in different colours! Local amenties included up to 20 small shops and at one point 5 pubs including The Swan, The Waterloo and The Crumpsall Hotel.

There is a small Anglican Church, St Thomas's, which is now amalgamated with St Mark's in Cheetham and a local primary School also named St Thomas's. There is a War Memorial [http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.18508] in the Churchyard commemorating those who died in the First World War.

These are opposite the site of a large biscuit factory operated by the Cooperative Wholesale Society, which is now demolished.
