The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre (HRS) in Essex, England, is a mixed-sex comprehensive school for ages 11-18. It is situated in the rural Essex countryside, occupying approximately 35 acres just to the north of Great Dunmow. A relatively new Sports and Leisure Centre, shared with the local community, is located on site. HRS is a specialist Humanities College with approximately 1500 pupils. The school recently built E block (DT Textiles), and a brand new library has just been completed and is called the Learning Zone.

History of the School

The Helena Romanes School was named after Ms Helena Romanes, who was the first Chair of Governors. It was built in 1958 on the site it occupies today, more buildings were later added, and it became fully comprehensive in 1970. In 2004, HRS modelled its coat-of-arms, with kind permission from the town council, on Dunmow Town's coat of arms. This year(2008)the school celebrates its 50th birthday on the current site.

Sixth Form

The Sixth Form was in the local news due to the introduction of a dress code. A few disgruntled students took their 'story' to the papers, starting a controversial debate within the Sixth Form. The matter was set straight when the rest of the students put their own view across to the papers, and it turned out that the majority of the students actually were indifferent to the dress code, which is still in place.
