Cinderella (Filipino band)

Cinderella is a Filipino soft pop band that rose to prominence in the 1970s. It forms part of the genre called Manila Sound, together with bands such as VST and Company, Hotdog and The Boyfriends. Cinderella's most recognized single is "T.L. Ako Sa'yo" (loosely translated to "You're My True Love", where T.L. stands for "True Love"). Other stand-out songs include such eventual classics as "Bato sa Buhangin" (Pebble Amongst the Sand), "Sa Aking Pag-iisa" (In My Solitude) and "Superstar ng Buhay Ko" (Superstar of My Life).

Members

The band recorded albums in Sunshine: The Manila Sound. Cinderella's line-up consisted of Cecile Colayco (lead vocals), Snaffu Rigor (vocals and drums), Violy Estrellado (back-up vocals), Sunny Ilacad (keyboard), Bob Guzman (guitars and vocal back-up), Celso Llarina (rhythm guitar and vocal back-up), Gig Ilacad (bass guitar) and also the late Yolly Samson (vocals). The band's good friends, comedians Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, also contributed songs, the most notable being the hit single "Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy". On November 21, 1997, Yolly Samson died from complications of breast cancer. She was 46.

Language

The band wrote their songs in Taglish (a fusion of Tagalog and English languages), and street jargon that was popular in the urban areas during 1970s.

For example, in the song "T.L. Ako Sa'yo", Cinderella used the word "dehins" which means "Hindi" ("No" in English). It is Tagalog street jargon which reverses the word, thereby making it sound like it is English. Also as previous mentioned, the acronym "T.L." stands for "True Love".

The title of the song "Ang Boyfriend kong Baduy" is also a mix of English and Tagalog words. Its lyrics also prominently uses this Taglish amalgam; consider these lines: ...but when we go out dating na, kulay ng polo niya'y pula... ...but when the guests go dancing na, lagi pa syang nauuna... ...'di ko ma-take ang gusto. Siya ay in-na-in ngunit out pa rin...

In the song "Ang Boypren Ko" the word boypren is an alteration of the English "boyfriend"; the title literally means "My Boyfriend".

The song "Sana'y Maging Steady Mo" translates to "I Wish I Could Be Your Boyfriend/Girlfriend". In this context, the word "steady" is used as a noun that refers to one's boyfriend or girlfriend.

Bossa Nova Experience

Brazil's bossa nova music was generally popular in the Philippines during the 60's and 70's but the form remained essentially Brazilian: it talked about experiences from a Brazilian point of view in the Brazilian language, which was Portuguese. Nevertheless, this proves the fact that Bossa Nova as a musical form was already present way before Janell Elaine and all the other singers who claim to have brought Bossa Nova to the Philippines. The new wave of Bossa Nova (a very interesting term to use, since "Bossa Nova" is the exact Portuguese translation of that phrase) is nothing but a mere re-emergence rather than a completely new movement. The country's Philippine music industry experienced this initially through the entry of the singer Janell Elaine. Soon after, other record labels and singers tried to cash in on this new phenomenon.

More recently, Cinderella has incorporated Bossa Nova into its albums, as recorded in Vicor Music Philippines. Titled "The Bossa Nova Experience", these albums were released in 2006. The performers were Alejandro and Isabella. The song "T.L. Ako Sa'yo" was recorded as a cover version by rock princess, Kitchie Nadal for the album Hopia, Mani, Popcorn.
