Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA) is an automated warning system for air traffic controllers.
STCA is designed to alert controllers to possible losses of separation that may occur according to the computer predicted flight path of an aircraft.
STCA is a concept rather than a specific system, there are therefore a number of differing implementations used by ATC providers across the world. Most systems use a visual alert on the radar display and some systems also provide an audible alert.
The equivalent system onboard an aircraft is TCAS. This system alerts pilots to possible conflicts, and suggests remedial actions, in the form of a climb or descent. Unlike TCAS, STCA does not normally suggest remedial action. If action is required, the controller will normally give a turn command to the aircraft, eliminating the possibility that his command will contradict that given by TCAS.
