Bakshi

Bakshi is a surname found among both Hindu and Muslim Punjabis, as well as Kashmiris. Bakshi also belong to the Sikh. This is also used as a title bestowed on them by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Sikh Bakshis are from Rawalpindi area and are khatris. Also used in the Bengali community. Bakshi is sometimes also written as 'Baxi'. They traditionally belonged to areas of Punjab and the NWFP that now fall in Pakistan. They were displaced from their traditional homes and relocated in India at the time of the partition of India in 1947.
