Nand Kumar Patel (born November 8, 1953, on Sunday) is an Indian National Congress politician from the Chhattisgarh state of India. He has won the legislative election from the Kharsia Assembly Constituency Fifth time in a row (1990, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008). He always stay away from controversy and News head line.^[1] He has served as a cabinet minister in state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh.

Early days

Nand Kumar Patel was born in a well reputed farmer family in Nandeli village of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh(before in madhyapradesh) as the second son of Mahender Singh Patel and Indumati Patel. His childhood was spent in rural atmosphere. He got married to Neela Patel on February 6, 1972.

Political career

During the year 1979, Nand Kumar Patel was elected the Member of Block Development Committee Raigarh (in Panchayati Raj) which marked the beginning of his political career. From 1983 till 1990, he remained the unopposed sarpanch of Nandeli panchyat. During his tenure,village head is known as sarpanch in Democratic way in India. Indira Aawas was constructed in Nandeli village and handed over to the villagers by immediate Madhya Pradesh State Governor Sarla Grewal on April 19, 1989.

On March 5, 1990, Patel was elected MLA of 9th Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh (Chhattisgarh was a part of Madhya Pradesh then). Arjun Singh, the then Chief Minister identified the political talent of Nand Kumar Patel, and gave him the Legislative Assembly ticket.

During 1994-95, Patel was appointed as the chairman of Library Committee of Madhya Pardesh Vidhan Sabha. On December 25, 1995, he was included in the Cabinet of Chief Minister Digvijay Singh as a Minister of state. On January 7, 1996 he took oath as minister of state for Water Resources Minister. From March 1998 till December 1998 he served as Minister of State for Home Affairs in madhya pradesh state.

On November 28, 1998, Nand Kumar Patel was elected from Kharsia Legislative Constituency as a Legislator of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the third time. During 1998 to 2000, he served as Minister for Home & Aviation Department in the cabinet of Digvijay Singh.^[2]

After the state of Chhattisgarh was formed, Patel served as the Minister for Home, Jail, and Transportation & Aviation in the Chhattisgarh state, from November 2000 to December 2003. He was also a member of High Level Committee for Political Affair and Work Consultation Committee. Patel has also worked as Minister in charge for Morena, Chhatarpur, Janjgir-Champa, Korba, Raigarh, Bilaspur and Raipur districts. On December 4, 2003 Nandkumar Patel was elected as M.L.A.from Kharsia Legislative Constituency for the fourth time. His other assignments include being the member of Legislative Assembly Privileges Committee, Public Sector Undertaking Committee, Library Committee and Work Consultation Committee.

In February 2006, Patel became the member of All India Congress Committee (AICC). As of April 2007, he is a member of various Committees of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly. on December 8, 2008 was fifth time elected as Member of Legislative assembly of Chhattisgarh of Highest winning Margin among chhattisgarh elected legislator on 2008.There is no other politician in the region who can stand at the height in which he is.
