Botswana general election, 2004

Botswana general election, 2004

The Botswana general election of 2004 was contested by the Botswana Democratic Party and eight opposition parties. 57 seats in the Parliament were contested, with the largest opposition party, the Botswana National Front accusing the country's Independent Election Commission of fundamental errors in its conduct of voter registrations. The election was won, as predicted, by the BDP who obtained 44 seats in the new parliament. Voter turnout was 76.2%.

Election results

Despite the fact that the Botswana National Front (BNF), Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM) and Botswana Peoples Party (BPP), entered into an election pact agreement in 2003, campaigns were marked by open personal attacks between the opposition parties and their respective leaders. Nevertheless, given the combined support for the opposition in the elections, any sort of opposition pact, merger, or alliance, would not have upset the BDP election victory.
