Orca Card

Orca Card

The Orca Card, which stands for "One Regional Card for All", is a contactless, stored value smart card used for payment of public transport fares in the Puget Sound region. It is being tested and only able to be used on limited routes. System-wide launch is scheduled for 2008.

Other uses

It is commonly held that TransLink (Vancouver) had originally come up with the ORCA acronym and planned to use it as the future smart card system for the Greater Vancouver Regional District. However, when Seattle decided to implement Vancouver's ORCA name for their system, Translink (Vancouver) changed their plans. Vancouver is currently developing a Smart Card system as of 2008, but a name has not been announced.

"Orca" is one name for the killer whale, a sea mammal of totemic importance to the Pacific Northwest.
