Richard W. Schneider

Dr. Richard W. Schneider, RADM. USCGR (Ret.) is the 23rd President of Norwich University. He has served as President since 1992.

Early life

Dr. Schneider is a native of Queens, New York. He is a 1968 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He earned a Master's degree in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University and a Doctorate in Public Policy from the University of Delaware. Dr. Schneider is married to Mrs. Jaime Gilroy and he has four married daughters. From 1985-92, Dr. Schneider served in several top administrative positions at Drexel University, including Vice President for Research, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Senior Vice President for Administration.

Life in the Military

Rear Admiral Richard W. Schneider, USCGR (Ret.) is a 1968 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he was Regimental Commander of the Corps of Cadets and Sailing Master on the barque "Eagle". He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Coast Guard and served eight years of active duty, including a tour in Vietnam and served 30 years of both active and reserve duty, retiring in 1998 as a Rear Admiral.

President of Norwich University

Dr. Richard W. Schneider proudly carries on the tradition Norwich University founder Alden Partridge began over 185 years ago of developing "citizen-soldiers." Through his experience in the military and academia, Dr. Schneider epitomizes Norwich's special and unique traditions. In July 1992, he became the 23rd President of Norwich University. Since then, Dr. Schneider has championed Norwich's advancement in academic, student life, and financial matters, positioning the university for continued growth and success in the new millennium.

In 1993, under Dr. Schneider's leadership, the undergraduate students and programs of Vermont College and Norwich University were successfully integrated on the Northfield campus. Norwich recently completed capital campaign exceeded its goal of $25 million by $3.8 million. In 2001, the sale of Vermont College to Union Institute and University was finalized.

Academically, in 2001, Dr. Schneider played a key role in establishing the U-Earned It scholarship program. This program has increased SAT scores of incoming freshmen classes for the past four years. Norwich University's online graduate program was also launched in 2001 and offers five online graduate programs and two online certificate programs. That same year, the National Security Agency designated Norwich as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Technology.

Dr. Schneider has worked with the University's Board of Trustees to create a comprehensive strategic plan for Norwich entitled NU2019. This document articulates the course the University will take in its quest for excellence in academics and student life, improved national brand, and improved financial security for the year 2019, as Norwich starts the third century of fulfilling its mission of service to its students and its nation.
