The Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories is the superior court of the Canadian territory of the Northwest Territories in cases of civil and criminal law, except those excluded by statute.
History
The Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories was founded in 1887 to replace the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories as the Court of Law. The first appointed judges were those who had previously served as appointed members of the Assembly and Stipendiary Magistrates.
When the Yukon was created as a separate territory from the Northwest Territories in 1898, the Supreme Court continued its jurisdiction over the territory as prescribed by the "Yukon Act 1898".
After Alberta and Saskatchewan were created in 1905 from the Northwest Territories, the Court continued to dispense justice in those jurisdictions until the Supreme Court of Alberta and Supreme Court of Saskatchewan were founded in 1910. The Court was inactive until Justice John Sissons was appointed in 1955. The Court has remained active since.
