- Landsberg Prison
Landsberg Prison is a penal facility located in the town of
Landsberg am Lech in the southwest of the German state ofBavaria , about 30 miles (65 km) west ofMunich and 35 kilometers south ofAugsburg .History
The prison was originally constructed around 1910 at the town's western outskirt. Its most noted inmate was
Adolf Hitler , who was incarcerated there in 1924 after his conviction on a charge oftreason . It was during his imprisonment at Landsberg that Hitler dictated and then wrote his book "Mein Kampf " ("My Struggle") with assistance from his deputy,Rudolf Hess . During the occupation ofGermany by the Allies afterWorld War II , the US Army designated theprison as "War Criminal Prison No. 1" [ [http://www.buergervereinigung-landsberg.org/english/warcriminals/warcriminals.shtml The Landsberg Prison for War Criminals] .] and held many convicted Nazi war criminals there. A number of Germanwar criminal s were executed at Landsberg byhanging . The last of these executions took place onJune 8 ,1951 and were the last executions conducted within the Federal Republic of Germany, then commonly known asWest Germany .The facility is now maintained by the Prison Service of the Bavarian Ministry of Justice.
