More information

Abbas Ali is an accomplished stylish left hand batsman who has achieved the distinction as the mainstay of the Delhi Giants batting citadel, which includes the likes of Marvan Atapattu, Avishka Gunawardene & Dale Benkenstein. This pedigreed cricketer, grandson of the legendary Mushtaq Ali, has played two match winning innings recently giving proof of his batting prowess. The first game was at the Edelweiss 20s Challenge when Abbas walked into bat when his team (Delhi Giants) was in a delicate position against the Mumbai Champs. Showing tremendous confidence Abbas stood tall against some of the most reputed international bowlers of the likes of Kasprowicz, Best & Van der Wath, displaying an array of breathtaking strokes evoking praise from some former international greats like Dean Jones in the commentary box. His cracking 44 off 36 balls in the fourth game of the ICL 20s World Series was further proof of his humongous talent.

A brilliant inning of Abbas Ali in a semi-final against Chandigarh Lions on 15th Dec.07 was a delight to watch. He played some brilliant stroke all over the ground against some of the World Class bowlers like Daryl Tuffey, Andrew Hall and Chris Crains. From the beginning of the innings he looked confident with his strokes. He scored fine 57 runs off 40 balls including 2 six and 4 boundaries.Earlier Marvan Atapattu's decision to bat first appeared to have misfired with the Jets having take-off trouble, struggling at 57 for 2 at the halfway mark. Someone had step on the pedal and Abbas Ali, grandson of former Indian opener Mushtaq, took charge, clattering Cairns for two big sixes, one over long-on and then in the next high over square leg. A left-hander with a strong on-side game, Abbas was not shy to take on the might of the Lions bowlers, including the delicious medium-pace offerings from Chris Cairns, Daryl Tuffey and Andrew Hall.

Abbas brought his first half-century of the first ICL tournament and his 59-run stand with TP Sudhindra formed the backbone of Jets innings. He deservedly won the Man-of-the-Match award.

Abbas Ali showed his tremendous batting from the very first game of the inaugural ICL Championship. Scoring a brilliant 30 N.O. off 19 balls against Chandigarh Lions at no. 7 position. His brave innings could not help his team to win the game but he impressed one and all in the very first game with his impressive stroke plays and huge sixes. Later in the second match he was promoted up to number four position where he again scored a brilliant 43 runs off 31 balls which helped his team to a comfortable victory against Hyderabad Heroes.

The inaugural ICL 20s series, where one saw some of the illustrious international stalwarts like Chris Cairns, Ian Harvey & Marvan Attapatu setting the tone for high standards of cricket. Some of the Indian players also grabbed the opportunity winning applauds from the cricket pundits for performing at a level of cricket, they were not exposed to before. Some of them were medium pacers Thiru Kumaran, Taduri Sudhindra & spinner Ali Murtaza. The top five leading run scorers were international stalwarts with the sole Indian being the stylish Delhi Giants left-hander Abbas Ali (A third generation Indian cricketer & grandson of the great Mushtaq Ali).
