Rupture disc

Rupture disc

A rupture disk or bursting disc is a pressure relief device that protects a vessel or system from overpressurization. Rupture discs have a one-time-use membrane that fails at a predetermined pressure, either positive or vacuum. The membrane is usually a thin metal foil, [ [http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT2630939&id=NehHAAAAEBAJ&pg=PP1&dq=rupture+disk#PPP2,M1 US Patent 2,630,939] ] but nearly any material can be used to suit a particular application. Rupture discs provide fast response to an increase in system pressure but once the membrane has failed it will not reseal.

Rupture discs are commonly used in aerospace, aviation, defense, nuclear, chemical and oilfield applications. They can be used as single protection devices or as a backup device for a conventional safety valve; if the pressure increases and the safety valves fails to operate (or can't relieve enough pressure fast enough), the rupture disk will operate.

Rupture discs are widely accepted throughout the industry and specified in most global pressure equipment design code (ASME, PED, etc). Rupture discs can be used to specifically protect installations against unacceptably high pressures, or can be designed to act as one-time valves to initiate with high reliability a sequence of actions required.
