Lola Bobesco

Lola Bobesco

Lola Bobesco (August 9, 1921, Craiova, Romania–September 4, 2003, Spa, Belgium) was a Belgian violinist of Romanian origin.

She began her career as a child prodigy, giving her first recital at the age of 6 together with her father. She gained her first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1934. She became known internationally after obtaining the seventh prize at the Eugène Ysaÿe contest, in 1937. She founded in 1958 the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie.

She was also a professor at the French-speaking "Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles" and was part of the jury of the "Queen Elizabeth contest" in 1971 and 1993. She recorded sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven, Gabriel Fauré, Johannes Brahms, César Franck and Claude Debussy and also baroque music.

The street 'Rue Lola Bobesco' that encircles behind the cultural center at the Brussels commune of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, is her namesake.
