Cook County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,176.[1] Its county seat is Grand Marais[2]. The Grand Portage Indian Reservation is entirely within the county.

Geography

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 3,339.72 square miles (8,649.8 km2), of which 1,450.60 square miles (3,757.0 km2) (or 43.43%) is land and 1,889.11 square miles (4,892.8 km2) (or 56.56%) is water.[3] (mostly within Lake Superior). The highest natural point in Minnesota, Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet (701 m), and the highest lake in Minnesota, Lake Abita at 2,048 feet (624 m), are located in Cook County.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 5,168 people, 2,350 households, and 1,438 families residing in the county. The population density was 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 4,708 housing units at an average density of 3 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 89.45% White, 7.59% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 21.6% were of German, 17.7% Norwegian, 11.5% Swedish, 7.2% Irish and 5.4% English ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 2,350 households out of which 24.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.00% were married couples living together, 6.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.80% were non-families. 32.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.73.

In the county the population was spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 5.40% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 31.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $36,640, and the median income for a family was $47,132. Males had a median income of $31,211 versus $23,650 for females. The per capita income for the county was $21,775. About 8.10% of families and 10.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.20% of those under age 18 and 6.80% of those age 65 or over.
