Rosyth School

Rosyth School (zh-s|s=乐赛学校) is a government co-educational primary school in Serangoon New Town, Singapore.

History

Rosyth School was established in 1956, situated at Rosyth Road from which it derived its name. The majority of pupils then were from the neighbouring kampungs. In early 1983, the school was identified as one of the four primary schools to host the Gifted Education Programme. By the end of 1983, the school moved to Parry Avenue.

To date, the school has had seven Principals, Mr Chee Seng Kee (1956 – 1959), Mrs Bertha Neo (1959 – 1978), Miss Ada Ponnappa (1978 – 1990), Mr Foo Chee Meng (1990 – 1997), Mr Fong Whay Chong (1997 – 2000)and Miss Elizabeth Chan Boey Koon (2001 – 2005) and Mrs Celine Ng Kim Choo (2006 – )

Due to rapid expansion of the school, it was relocated in 2002 to a larger premise located at Serangoon North Avenue 4. It currently has nearly 3000 students. These students are distributed into the morning and afternoon sessions. Primary 1, 2 and 3 students have their lessons in the afternoon while Primary 4,5 and 6 students have their lessons in the morning.

In 2005, Rosyth School's Adil Hakeem B Mohamad Rafee, currently a student of Raffles Institution, became the year's top Primary School Leaving Examination student, leading the cohort of more than 51,000 pupils with an aggregate score of 282. ref|AdilHakeem For the 2006 batch, 100% of the pupils had passed their PSLE. The 2007 batch also had 100% pupils pass for their PSLE.

As of 2007, Rosyth School has changed its distibution of classes after conducting a survey among parents. Pri 1,2 and 3 students have their lessons in the afternoon while Pri 4,5 and 6 students have their classes in the morning.

Gifted Education Programme

The Gifted Education Programme began at Rosyth in 1984. The enriched subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Chinese.

In 1996, an In-house Counsellor was appointed from among the staff of Rosyth to primarily look at the affective needs of pupils in the program. Dialogue sessions involving the principal, vice-principal, HOD (GEP(2)), and counsellor are held once a term to meet parents of pupils who need assistance either in their work or in their behavior and attitude.

To give pupils the opportunity to interact with other pupils who were less fortunate, the school adopted Grace Haven under the Community Builder programme in 1996. Pupils visited the home twice in 2003. The school is presently working on a more structured programme with the home.

Outdoor activities have been organised for selected pupils to give opportunities for leadership and character building as well as adventure and physical training.

Furthermore, the Gifted Education pupils also frequently support the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) and hold sales for their handicrafts in order to raise money for them. Also, pupils visit the foundation once in Primary 5 for community service.
