Henderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It was formed in 1799. As of 2006, the population was 45,666. The county seat is the City of Henderson.GR|6 The county was named for Colonel Richard Henderson who originally purchased 17,000,000 acres (69,000 km²) of land from the Cherokee Indians, only to have the purchase voided by the Virginia legislature. Then, in 1778, the Richard Henderson Company was granted 200,000 acres (800 km²) in recognition of the $50,000 paid by the company to the Indians in the Treaty of Watauga. Land in that grant is included in the present boundary of Henderson County.

Geography

Henderson County is part of the Western Coal Fields region of Kentucky. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 467 square miles (1,210 km²), of which, 440 square miles (1,140 km²) of it is land and 27 square miles (70 km²) of it (5.80%) is water.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 44,829 people, 18,095 households, and 12,576 families residing in the county. The population density was 102 people per square mile (39/km²). There were 19,466 housing units at an average density of 44 per square mile (17/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.16% White, 7.10% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 18,095 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% were married couples living together, 11.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% were non-families. 26.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,892, and the median income for a family was $44,703. Males had a median income of $33,838 versus $22,572 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,470. About 9.70% of families and 12.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.20% of those under age 18 and 10.10% of those age 65 or over.
