"Take the Time" is a song by progressive metal band Dream Theater, and is the third track on their second album "Images and Words". It is also featured on the "Once in a LIVEtime" CD and the "" VHS and DVD. It is also featured as the twelfth track on the first disc of their DVD, "Chaos In Motion 2007-2008". It is also available as a remastered version on Dream Theater's compilation CD "Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)".

Each member of the band wrote a section of the lyrics. The lyrics reflect their feelings about the long, frustrating period of the band's early history during which they were searching for a new vocalist.

The quote "Ora che ho perso la vista, ci vedo di più" (at 3:44, right after "I can see much clearer now I'm blind") is taken from the italian movie "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso", which in English means "Now that I lost vision, I can see more".

During their playing of the song on the "Once in a LIVEtime" CD, after John Petrucci's solo, the band breaks off from the original song and starts playing the solo to the Lynyrd Skynyrd song Free Bird.

On certain occasions when the band plays the song live, they cut out the second verse, abridging the song; presumably due to it being very difficult to sing and taking a toll on James LaBrie's voice. In addition, Mike Portnoy usually sings the first verse, with LaBrie coming in on the last line ("I think it's time for a change").

At 1:08 into the song, just before LaBrie's vocals enter, a direct sample from the intro to "Christmas Rappin'" by hip hop artist Kurtis Blow can be heard in the form of the lyrics "Hold it now".
