Alfred Gibbs (April 22, 1823 – December 26, 1868) was a career officer in the United States Army who served as a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Military career

Gibbs graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846 and served in the Mounted Rifles. At the start of the Civil War, he was colonel of a regiment of New York infantry. When his term of enlistment expired, he reenlisted as a colonel of New York cavalry. On October 19, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers. He commanded a cavalry brigade during most of the Virginia operations of 1864 and 1865.

He remained in the Regular Army following the war, serving in various western outposts. He died while on active duty as a major in the 7th U.S. Cavalry and is buried in Saint Mary's Episcopal Churchyard Portsmouth, Rhode Island.findagrave|5894403 Retrieved on 2008-07-28]
