Joseph Chatterton

Joseph Chatterton

Joseph Chatterton (February 14, 1867 — November 7, 1886) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm slow bowler who played for Derbyshire between 1884 and 1886.

Chatterton's debut, against Sussex in 1884, saw the young bowler achieve a four-wicket haul in his first innings, coupled with three wickets in the second. What is more, this was achieved with an economy rate of less than one per over throughout the entire match, while he claimed the scalps of the experienced Henry Phillips, as well as round-arm bowler and cricket coach William Tester.

Chatterton's most involved season was his last, 1886, in which he played eight of the nine matches his Derbyshire team contested in the season. He was born in Thornsett and died in Derby. Chatterton, at the age of 19 years and 266 days at the time of his death, is possibly the youngest Derbyshire first-class cricketer on record to lose his life.

Chatterton's brother, William, over five years his senior, was a former Derbyshire captain and one-time England Test cricketer.
