The Siege of Citium (Kition) was a joint naval and land battle fought between the Athenian-led Delian League and the Persian Empire. Commander Cimon unsuccessfully battled in Citium in an attempt to weaken Persia's grasp on Cyprus. However, the operation failed as he died during the engagement; Cimon's death was attributed to either a battle wound or disease. The command of the fleet was consequently given to Anaxicrates whom subsequently decided to abandon the objective in Citium and set sail for a battle in Salamis, Cyprus. While the Delian League's efforts at Citium proved to be a failure, the battle soon later at Salamis ended in an Athenian military success. Nonetheless Cyprus remained in the control of the Persian Empire.
