Charlotte Bobcats draft history

In the 2004 NBA Draft, Emeka Okafor became the Bobcats' first ever draft pick.

The Charlotte Bobcats were established in 2004 as an expansion team, becoming the National Basketball Association's (NBA) 30th team,^[1] only two seasons after Charlotte's previous NBA team, the Charlotte Hornets, relocated to New Orleans and became the New Orleans Hornets.^[2] The Bobcats first participated in the 2004 NBA Draft, two days after their expansion draft was held.^[3]

In 1989, the NBA agreed with the National Basketball Players' Association to limit drafts to two rounds, an arrangement that has remained the same up the present time.^[4] Before each draft, an NBA Draft Lottery determines the first round selection order for the teams that missed the playoffs during the prior season.^[4] Teams can also trade their picks, which means that in some drafts teams may have more or less than two draft picks, although they must have at least one first-round pick every other year.^[5]

Although none of the players that the Bobcats have drafted have been voted All-Stars, Emeka Okafor was named the 2004–05 Rookie of the Year^[6] and voted to the All-Rookie First Team.^[7] Additionally, Raymond Felton and Adam Morrison were named to the 2005–06 and 2006–07 All-Rookie Second Team, respectively.^[7][8] In the 2008 NBA Draft, Alexis Ajinça became the first foreign-born player to be drafted by the Bobcats,^[9] and D. J. Augustin was selected to the 2008–09 All-Rookie Second Team.^[10]
