Lauren Hewitt

Lauren Hewitt

Lauren Hewitt (born November 25, 1978 in Warracknabeal, Victoria) is a track and field sprinter from Australia, who was the dominant female sprinter in 1999 on the domestic circuit, and made a splash on the international scene. She competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996, and won the bronze medal in the women's 200 metres at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Her performances at the 1999 World Championships in Seville were the highlight of her career. In the weaker of her two events, the 100m, she finished in the top 16, recording personal best times in both her quarter-final (11.29 seconds) and semi-final (11.28s) runs. But it was her performance in the 200m which was special. After finishing second in her heat and third in the quarter-final, Hewitt surpassed expectations by running a personal best 22.54s to make the final. Another personal best 22.53s saw her finish seventh in the final.
