"Oliver Twist" is a television mini-series produced by ITV in 1999. It was based on the book "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens.
The cast included Sophia Myles as Agnes Leeford (Oliver's mother), Robert Lindsay as Fagin, Andy Serkis as Bill Sikes, Marc Warren as Monks, James Bradshaw as Noah Claypole, and Keira Knightley as Rose Fleming. The title role of Oliver was played by newcomer Sam Smith.
The adaptation, by Alan Bleasdale, attracted controversy, particularly for the decision to begin with two hours of backstory (much of it invented by Bleasdale) before reaching the plot of the novel. Furthermore, Bleasdale altered well-known sections of the novel.
