Pablo Elvíra (
September 24 ,1937 –February 5 ,2000 ) was an Americanbaritone . Elvíra was born inSan Juan, Puerto Rico , and began his musical career playingjazz trumpet there, both with his father's band and later his own. In 1966, he joined the voice faculty of theIndiana University School of Music; during his eight years there he performed baritone roles in many of the school's opera productions.Elvíra debuted at the
Metropolitan Opera inNew York City in 1978, and performed there over 100 times during the next 12 years. In 1974, he made his first appearance with theNew York City Opera . His signature role was that of Figaro in "The Barber of Seville ".Elvíra maintained his primary residence in
Bozeman, Montana , and he became known as a strong supporter of opera in that state.Discography
