Nicole DiMera (born Mendez, née Walker, formerly Roberts, Kiriakis) is a fictional character on the NBC soap opera, Days of our Lives, a long running series about working-class life in the fictional town of Salem. She was introduced in 1998 by head writer Sally Sussman Morina, and executive producer Ken Corday. Actress Arianne Zucker has portrayed the character since her introduction to the series in 1998.[1] Zucker took a short, two year break from 2006-2008 when she returned to the series again in the same role.

Nicole's storylines often focused on treachery, death, and love. The character is scripted as the daughter of Fay Walker, and Paul Mendez. Her father, Paul, forced her to do pornography in her adolescence under the name "Misty Circle". The character came to Salem as a small town waitress, but almost immediately started getting involved with the major families that the show revolved around. She is known for her longstanding feud with her enemy, Sami Brady. A storyline in 2009 called "The Baby Switch" featured Nicole having a miscarriage; lying to her husband; and stealing Sami's baby, Sydney.[2]

Zucker was nominated for Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for the role in 2010.[3]

Storylines

Nicole, the daughter of Paul Mendez and Fay Walker, first arrives in Salem in February 1998. She is an overworked waitress,at the Java Cafe.[4] After a cancer scare and a brief rekindling of her relationship with Eric, she divorces Lucas and schemes her way into the arms of Victor Kiriakis (much to the dismay of Kate Roberts, the mother of Victor's son, Philip Kirakis). In July 2001, Nicole's father dies. Nicole and Victor marry, but the honeymoon period is brief. It wasn't long before Nicole plots Victor's death, and her subsequent inheritance of the Kiriakis fortune. She pays Larry Welch to assassinate Victor, but it ends up not happening. She then teams up with Jan Spears, and Victor's death is linked with the Salem Stalker killings.[4]

Nicole then turns her pursuit to Victor's grandson, Brady Black.[4] Thinking she has finally found her true love, she is ready to settle down. Nicole is unable to stop her manipulative and deceptive behavior and when she finds out that Brady's long-time love Chloe Lane was still alive, the web of deceit starts once again. When Brady eventually finds out what Nicole has been hiding from him, he ends their relationship. Nicole leaves town in 2006. After Nicole's departure it is mentioned on the show that she had met and wanted to marry "some soap actor," presumably a nod to the fact portrayer Zucker was married to her former Days of our Lives costar Kyle Lowder.[1]

In April 2008, Nicole returns to Salem claiming to still be married to Victor.[4] Nicole hires EJ Wells to help her divorce Victor. However, Nicole learns she is still married to her first husband, Trent Robbins.[4] She thinks that their marriage had been annulled; as a consequence, her marriages to both Lucas and Victor were invalid. Nicole married Trent while in college. Trent was so abusive towards Nicole that she eventually packed her things and left him. However, she never files for divorce so technically, since she is still married to Trent.

Trent is found stabbed to death in September 2008. Nicole becomes a prime suspect of the murder. While working together, E.J. sometimes uses Nicole to make Sami jealous.[4] After being dumped by Sami, E.J. becomes devastated, so he and Nicole have sex in an elevator (during which time he calls out "Sami"). Soon after the elevator romp, Nicole discovers that she is pregnant. However, she was told five years earlier that she could never have a child. She saw it as a "miracle" baby. However, Sami Brady, E.J.'s ex-wife discovers that she also became pregnant while she and E.J. were married. Nicole moves into the DiMera mansion with E.J. Sadly, Nicole goes into preterm labor with their daughter, and miscarries. Although, she realizes that E.J. loves the child that she carried and not her. Unable to tell EJ because of the fear of abandonment, Nicole pretends to be pregnant.[4] She finds out that E.J. is still in love with Sami, so Nicole uses "their baby" to keep E.J. from being with Sami.

In January 2009, Sami Brady gives birth to her and EJ's second child together, a baby girl and names her Grace.[4] Nicole, who is angry at Sami because she was pregnant with EJ's baby and Nicole was not, switches EJ and Sami's baby with the baby she was going to adopt from a teenage girl named Mia McCormick. After stealing Sami's baby, she has a fake "labor" and tells E.J. that Sami's baby was hers. She names the baby Sydney. She often tells Sydney that "she is not Sami's baby... that she is E.J.'s and hers." After lying to everyone for months, Nicole finds out that Sami's "baby" Grace is very sick. Grace later dies. Nicole and Sami fight often because Nicole is very protective over Sydney, and she doesn't allow Sami, Sydney's real mother, to even touch her. Nicole often tells Sami that "she is Sydney's mother and Sami is not." Sami and E.J. become a little suspicious over Nicole's odd behavior, but decide to ignore it. Mia returns to Salem from Japan and heads to the DiMera mansion. She asks to see Nicole, but she speaks to Tony instead. Mia accidentally reveals that Sydney is "her daughter." Tony then confronts Nicole about it, but he is killed before he could tell EJ that Sydney is not his daughter. EJ and Nicole marry on April 21, 2009.

Her secret is safe until EJ becomes suspicious of her and sends someone to follow her. After he hears the recording of Nicole and Brady's talk where she admits she lost their baby, he kicks Nicole and Sydney out of the mansion. She tells Mia that EJ knows Sydney is not his daughter, but Chad overhears and wants custody of Sydney. Eventually, the truth comes out that Nicole switched the babies, and Sydney is reunited with Sami and EJ. Sami and E.J. become terribly angry with Nicole for stealing their child from them and lying to them for so long. Nicole is still convinced that she is Sydney's mother because she raised her since she was born until she was about a year old. She often says, "Sydney is mine." Sami and Nicole fight often because Nicole says that Sydney is hers because of her love for her. She accuses Sami of wanting Sydney back because she was Sami's "property" and not because Sami really loves Sydney. Sami is furious at Nicole for watching her suffer and grieve over the death of Grace, a child that wasn't even hers. E.J. is also furious at Nicole for lying to him so many times. Nicole is arrested for stealing Sydney and illegally adopting Mia McCormick's baby, Grace. E.J. also divorces Nicole while she is in prison. Nicole then kidnaps Sydney and flees to Cleveland, where she loses her, and is sentenced to 20 years in prison. She finally remembers that Anna DiMera is the one who took Sydney from her, and blackmails her into helping Nicole get released from prison.[4]

After being released from prison, she got back together with Brady. But when EJ offered her a role in Sydney's life, she left Brady and remarried EJ. The marriage, however, didn't last long as EJ met and fell in love with Taylor, Nicole's sister. And while EJ was romancing Taylor, Nicole found out what EJ and Stefano did to Rafe and that they are partly responsible for the death of her mother, Fay. Nicole has now left EJ again after finding out the truth and realising she will never mean anything to Sydney and that she's only complicating her life. She found out that Brady was the one who beat EJ up and is trying to get back together with him and convincing him to leave town with her.

Eventually Nicole and Brady get back together and EJ comes to the realization that he has feelings for Nicole. In late September, Nicole is held hostage at knife-point by the man who has been attacking women on the pier. With EJ there to keep her calm Nicole is fearful for her life. After the whole ordeal is over Nicole and EJ continue to bond. Nicole eventually decides to break it off with Brady and decides that she doesn't want to be in a relationship with any man right now.

EJ who has just announced that he is running for mayor of Salem, asks Nicole to be his campaign manager which she intially declines, but after much convincing she agrees to on one condition, they must keep their relationships strikly professional. However the two continue to bond and be flirtatious, and Nicole's feelings for EJ begin to resurface as well. On November 8, a blizzard hits Salem and EJ and Nicole end up trapped in the DiMera mansion, the two eventually give in and make love. The next morning EJ declares that they belong together and that he wants to be with Nicole again, although Nicole wants to be a family with EJ again she can't as is afraid of being hurt again, and decides she just can't take the risk and leaves him. The following day on November 10, a devastated Nicole tells and equally devastated EJ that she has filed for divorce and that she wants to end their marriage despite objections from EJ.
